Although nearly lost with time, dragons are abundant in Filipino folklore and spirituality. Stories of Filipino dragons usually carry the motifs of divinity, destiny, and especially nature. I wanted to ornately visualize these themes in this design while drawing inspiration from traditional Filipino textile patterns and architecture, where dragon designs can be commonly found. The bottom center sigil is my interpretation of the word tadhana, meaning destiny, in baybayin or pre-colonial Filipino script. As a Filipina, I hope that with this shirt a rare piece of history continues to be remembered and appreciated by modern times.
