When I read Huey's story - about eating dragon fruit and becoming a dragon - I was reminded of werewolf myths.
I wondered - what would a fruit look like that could bite you back? Whose bite would have unbelievable transformative properties? It turns the phrase 'you are what you eat' onto its head.
The design started by actually carving a dragon fruit by hand, photographing the carving, then using those images as the springboard for my illustration. In the process of carving, I observed up close the marvelous textures of the different parts of the fruit - the waxy peel with its dramatic color changes, the juicy inside full of seeds and the tiniest of fibrous threads.
