A knight stands in a field, overlooking the carnage and decay that remains in the aftermath of battle. Crows fly overhead, one settles on the hilt of a sword, stabbed into the mud. "Was it worth it?" its beady eyes ask her. The honor & glory, a heavenly existence which was promised in exchange for not only your fealty, but your blood and peace and kindness, was it worth it? A vow made to kings in faraway lands, who sit in their ivory towers, fat on the feasts and wine and sacrifices of the people below, was it worth it?

She drops her sword and peels off her armor, still shining wet with blood -- hers or another's she no longer knows -- and falls to her knees. No longer shall she believe in the promise of an unearthly respite from the toils of mortals. Hell is here, on her hands, in the blood that will never wash away and in the faces of soldier after soldier struck down by her blade. She looks skyward, to the clouds and the birds that fly overhead, and sends a prayer that she might join them, to a place where she might find forgiveness, redemption, and peace -- her own heaven, may she find it one day.
