Lily of the Valley is a flower steeped in history and symbolism, representing the return of happiness, purity, humility, and good fortune. It has long been a popular choice for wedding bouquets, particularly among royalty, to signify innocence and sweetness, and it is often associated with the Virgin Mary. Despite these gentle and virtuous associations, Lily of the Valley is highly toxic, with every part of the plant capable of causing severe, even fatal, poisoning if consumed. This striking contradiction became the inspiration for my design.
My piece explores the tension between grace and danger, highlighting the irony that something so delicate and beautiful can also possess the power to bring about death. By juxtaposing the flower's soft, innocent appearance with its lethal nature, the design invites viewers to question how beauty can conceal hidden peril and how appearances often mask deeper, more complex truths.
