I grew up reading Greek mythology and variations of it for fun. Persephone is one of my favorite stories, no matter how gruesome or graphic it can get. As soon as I saw the competition theme: "Heaven or Hell," I knew I wanted to create a Persephone T-shirt. Persephone represents both heaven and hell, with Kore: the maiden and goddess of spring, and Persephone: the queen of the underworld. My goal with this design was to capture the beauty that she was known and abducted for, elements that paired with both personas, and the pomegranate. I wanted Persephone to be a Greco-Roman-inspired statue as the centerpiece, with high-contrast lighting and styles separating her personas, while accompanied by pomegranates and their flowers. I wanted this piece to be a reflection of Persephone alone, and include her defining features and key elements to her story, to encompass the entire "Heaven or Hell" theme in one character.

Persephone's Story:
Kore, the goddess of spring, daughter of Demeter. Kore's beauty caught Hades' eye, and he decided to abduct her to the underworld. Demeter searched the Earth for her and eventually heard that she had been taken to the underworld. Demeter, known for her wrath, scoured the Earth and created a famine so heavy that no crops would grow. Zeus and Hermes planned a rescue mission for Kore. Hermes negotiated with Hades, all while Hades either convinced Kore or fed her a kernel from the Pomegranate, which persuades her to return to him when she leaves the underworld. Hades agrees to let Kore return to Demeter for 1/3 (or 1/2) of the year as long as she returns to him. When Kore is with Demeter, spring flourishes. While she is away, winter comes, and she becomes Persephone: the queen of the underworld.
