The Devil’s Hand by @lapigna.illustrations

Title: The Devil’s Hand

I created this piece for the Poe and Row T-shirt Contest, where the theme was “Heaven or Hell.” The first thing that came to mind was the iconic cover of Black Sabbath’s Heaven and Hell, which has always been one of my favorite album covers. I love how it takes something as symbolic as angels and places them in such an unexpected situation: casually playing cards. It immediately tells a story without saying a word.

I wanted to keep that same feeling but reinterpret it in my own style. Instead of three angels, I drew two angels and one devil sitting around a poker table. At first glance, the devil is exactly who you’d expect him to be. He’s openly cheating, pulling a card from the inside of his jacket, almost as if he doesn’t even care about being caught. One of the angels is playing honestly, focused only on the game in front of him.

The interesting part is the second angel. He looks completely innocent, but if you pay attention, you’ll notice he’s secretly hiding two aces up his sleeve. That small detail completely changes the story. Suddenly, the devil isn’t the only liar at the table.

That contrast is what this illustration is really about. We tend to think that good and evil are easy to recognize, but people are rarely that simple. Sometimes the person who looks the most trustworthy is hiding just as much as the one who looks guilty. The halos and horns become almost meaningless when everyone is playing the same game.

Visually, I kept the illustration clean and monochromatic so it would work as a bold T-shirt print while also paying tribute to the classic rock aesthetic that inspired it. It was important for me to create something that felt familiar to Black Sabbath fans but still reflected my own visual language and sense of humor.
