Xolotl was an Aztec God of Death, but not THE Aztec god of death. Xolotl helped guide beings to the after life. Often depicted as a dog-headed human hybrid. It's the depictions where we get the name for the dogs "Xoloitzcuintle" or "Mexican Hairless Dog".

During the dawn of a new era, a new sun had to be created and in order to do that, all of the gods had to give up their immortality, and sacrifice themselves. Xolotl, the guide of death, was afraid and did not want to die. Witnessing their fellow brothers and sisters perish, they cried so much that their eyes fell out of their sockets.

Xolotl attempted to flee as other gods tried to take their life by force. They disguised themselves as many things, but then decided to jump into a body of water, creating a new amphibian- the Axolotl. Eventually Xolotl was found and sacrificed against their will in order to for the new sun to move, and a new age to begin.

Even a god of death was afraid of the end. They guided souls to their forever resting place, weather that was a version of Heaven or Hell was dependent on that individual soul. Xolotl didn't want to die as much as they wanted to keep living and doing their duty. However, the universe had other plans, and Xolotl experienced a person hell of fear and sorrow. Whether or not they found peace in the end, we will never know...
